2014 Golf Tournament
This year, the Ida Ballard Simon Memorial Scholarship Fund celebrated 7 years of golf tournament fundraisers as a commemorative milestone, 7 years of providing 4-year scholarships, book / travel scholarships and 7 years of sharing the love, camaraderie and generosity of friends, family and supporters (near and far) that share our mission by supporting Ida’s Legacy for Education. Annual IBS Memorial Golf Tournaments honor the late Ida Ballard Simon, former graduate and Vice President of Advancement at Lincoln University – the oldest Historical Black College and University (HBCU) west of the Mississippi and the only institution in America founded by African American War veterans.
Commemorative plans to celebrate 7 years of golf tournament fundraisers were going so nice that they had to be planned twice! Due to the rain and a soggy golf course, the IBS Golf Tournament was rescheduled from May 17 (Harrah’s Resort) to June 14 (North Creek Golf Course).
In addition to enjoying a continental breakfast, 9-hole snack and Awards Lunch, 76 Golfers registered to play 2-Person Scramble on 18 holes for an opportunity to win one of the sixty 7th Annual Commemorative Golf Tournament Trophy'(s).
Wood-based trophies with removable glass tops, varying golf ball colors and engraved team placements to distinguish Flight Levels and Team Placements.
Additionally, each golfer received a 7th Annual Commemorative Cooler-Bag (shaped like a miniature golf bag), appreciation gifts and chances to win choice golf and electronic items.

Previous Rain Dates delayed “Full Experience” for Tournament Sponsor and Host
Annual Ida Ballard Simon Memorial Golf Tournaments were rained out and re-scheduled during in 2010, 2013 and 2014. Prior to this year, Ella Ballard (Ida’s sister) travelled from New York to Memphis to assist with hosting his annual event in 2010 and 2013. When the original 2014 date was cancelled band re-scheduled due to rain, Ella jokingly stated “ … every time that I’m here for the tournament, we have to cancel re-schedule and I need to get back to my students!”
Fortunately, this year Ella was in Memphis thru May and June! After experiencing golf tournament planning, 1st date setup, weather cancellations, plan revisions, 2nd date setup and finally the opportunity to assist with managing the golf tournament event as a host as well as post event task – finally, Ella can definitely identify with the “full experience” and she had a great time!
